Indira Gandhi International Airport

The Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi is one of the most important gateways to India. This airport is playing the role of one of the most important connectors between India and the rest of the world. The Second Terminal or the International Terminal is the glory of the airport and this is the home to almost 35 airlines, providing service to various parts of the world.

The Terminal I, which was earlier known as the Palam airport, is exclusively used for the domestic purposes. The Terminal 1 has been extended into three separate terminals - 1A ,for use of the domestic flights of state owned Indian, 1B, for domestic airlines and domestic arrival terminal. There is also a separate area for the use of VVIP personnels.

The Terminal 1 is having a capacity of carrying an estimated 7.15 million passengers per annum. Including the international terminal the airport, the total passenger carrying capacity of the airport is 12.5 million but in 2005/06 the total number excelled above 16.2 million passengers. This airport also provides free transfer shuttle between the terminals.

Delhi Airport has two non-parallel runways: the main runway 10/28 which is 12,500 ft long and an auxiliary
runway 09/27 which is of 9,229 ft length. Runway 28 is one of the limited number of runways in Asia and the only one in South Asia equipped with CAT III-B Instrument Landing System.

The winter of 2005 gave this airport a huge trouble and a record number of disruptions of flights happened at Delhi airport due to smog. Since then some domestic airlines have trained their pilots to operate under CAT-II conditions of a minimum 350 m visibility. On 31 March 2006, IGI became the first Indian airport to operate two runways simultaneously following a test run involving a SpiceJet plane landing and a Jet Airways plane taking off at the same time.
